How we handle wildlife claims
Sources awaiting check
Wildlife safety is part of why people trust us, so we hold ourselves to clear rules about what we say.
Our rules
- We don't rate wildlife safety ourselves. We don't run trials, and we never give a mower a wildlife score.
- We cite, by name. Where independent research has published results, we say who did it, when, what it covered and what it didn't, and link to it.
- We don't say "safe" on our own authority. If a source says a feature or model reduced harm, we quote the source. We never describe a mower as harmless to wildlife in our own words.
- Daylight only, always. Every schedule and tip on this site keeps mowing between sunrise and sunset, with a margin either side. We never suggest mowing from dusk to dawn.
- Every mower page carries the wildlife reminder, with a link to the British Hedgehog Preservation Society's advice.
Feature filters
Where research has linked a design feature to a better result, such as pivoting blades, we may let you filter models by that feature. We only show it where the manufacturer publishes the feature, and the filter never labels a model safe.
If we get it wrong
Tell us, and we'll correct it and note the change. See our corrections policy.
